On The Trail

Citizen Kate hosts her first political fundraiser, and tries to figure out who to vote through by drinking: Obamatini vs. Old Fashioned McCain.

On August 14, 2008, I hosted my first official fundraiser at Schuba’s in Chicago. The whole Citizen Kate team worked hard to draw a huge crowd. It was going to be incredible. Schuba’s donated food. Heinkein sponsored us with drinks. Food and drinks? That’s more than I get on the campaign trail, so this was for sure going to be a win.

Well, not as many people showed up as I hoped. I guess my appearance on Chicago Tonight, a really important Chicago news show on WTTW/PBS, didn’t really spark as many fans or followers as I thought. But the people that did show up were tremendous.

They’re love, support and hugs made all the difference. I even signed a few autographs. So many great friend (Mike, Johnny, Heather, the other Kate, David Z, etc.). The best part was that my very first political interview ever showed up to support me -- Scott Waguespak (that’s him in the picture).

Scott ran against the incumbent Alderman in my district. I didn’t even know want an Alderman was. I just kept thinking “olderman”. But Scott is super cute and super young. He was super sweet to me and took the time to teach me. If more politicians were like him, this world would be a smarter place.

He really gave me some good tips and asked people for money. I had a hard time doing it. It’s weird to ask friends for money. I felt like I should buy them a drink. So I did. Maybe I can’t be a politician after all. It’s expensive to travel on the trail. Even the rich politicians ask for money.

Note to self: If I could pay for things on the campaign trail with hugs, I wouldn’t need to ask anyone for money. I’m really good at hugging. Can I get paid for that?

We raised $1,500. But need $5,000 to cover our travel expenses. Feel free to donate now. Even if it’s $1. Every penny counts. That’s what I’ve learned.
